Cultivation Tips

Cacti and succulents don’t like the desert and often only barely survive. Whereas cacti are more tolerant of hot and dry conditions, most succulents are the least tolerant.

Most leafy and fleshy succulents, apart from cacti, seem to do better in the garden than in pots.

Well drained sunny gardens are best with good garden soil that is light and drains well.

Hardware stores and garden centres sell bags of cactus and succulent mix. This is good for tiny miniatures that grow slowly.eg living stones (Lithops) and some small compact growing cacti varieties. This mix is not suitable for all types of succulents and in fact can be harmful to the echeveria group, if planted in terracotta pots.

Echeverias instead prefer to have more compost or general potting mix that is used for most other plants.
